Economists and commentators agree that India has the potential to become a global centre for innovative drug development and production. It possesses the talent and resources to do this successfully and has the pharmaceutical base to support such activity. However, for this to become a reality, India must create the enabling conditions that ensure that products of innovation receive full patent protection. Without this protection neither Indian nor multinational companies would be willing to make the necessary investment in research and development.
